Playground Improvement Project (PIP)

Playground Improvement

We believe that play is a vital part of every child’s development. Our Playground Improvement Project (PIP) focuses on creating a rich, engaging and active play environment where children can explore, create, collaborate and enjoy their time outdoors.

Through PIP, we have developed our playground spaces so that children have access to a wide range of play opportunities during break and lunchtime. These include imaginative play, construction activities, physical play, music making and opportunities for creative exploration. Children are encouraged to use a variety of open ended resources which allow them to invent games, build structures and work together.

Play is an important part of children’s social, emotional and physical development. During playtimes, children learn how to cooperate, negotiate roles, solve problems and develop friendships. They also build resilience, confidence and independence as they explore new ideas and challenges.

The project also supports children’s physical wellbeing by encouraging movement, activity and outdoor exploration throughout the school day. We want every child to feel happy, included and engaged during playtimes.

Our playground spaces continue to develop as we listen to pupil voice and observe how children use the areas. By giving children the freedom to explore and be creative in their play, we are helping them to develop important life skills that support both learning and wellbeing.

Wet play provision

When the weather prevents children from playing outside, classrooms provide wet play boxes so that children can continue to enjoy positive play experiences indoors. These boxes contain a range of activities such as table top games, puzzles, Lego, construction materials, drawing activities and small world play including cars and figures.

These activities encourage children to work together, share resources, take turns and develop problem solving skills. They also provide opportunities for creativity, communication and cooperation in a relaxed classroom environment. Wet play sessions ensure that children remain engaged and supported even when outdoor play is not possible.
