Department for Education Vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium: To ensure all pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

Our aim: To ensure that children at John Stainer have access to a broad and balanced curriculum. To increase children’s engagement and attainment in sport through the delivery of high quality PE lessons and extra-curricular opportunities. To ensure all children are able to reach curriculum standards in swimming and self-rescue skills.

Success Criteria

To provide quality training to enable staff to teach gymnastics and dance principles effectively.



External staff training provided for teachers by 'Moving Matters' to help improve subject knowledge.




Teachers will teach lessons aligned to the PE National Curriculum and Ofsted requirements.


To increase the range of sports that that are available to the pupils.

Sports coach to complete training courses in sports other than football.


Increase numbers in participation especially pupils who are less active and lack confidence.

To expose children to extracurricular sports.

Sports coaches to deliver sports club after school for KS1 and KS2.

Salary - coaches for clubs



Healthy competition and cooperative learning is promoted.

At least 1 Pupil Premium pupil from each class to access after school sports club.

Our established football team will be able to train regularly.

To ensure quality resources are available to improve and sustain the quality of PE teaching.



PE leader to purchase equipment needed to provide high level teaching in gymnastics - trestle tables, balance beams, safety mats.

Additional top up equipment to be purchased when older items are damaged or worn e.g.: footballs.


Increased balance and co-ordination in all pupils.

PE lessons are more engaging and enjoyable, all children have access to equipment for the entirety of lessons.

To store all equipment safely and securely.

PE leader to purchase additional storage shed for new gymnastics equipment.


All gymnastics equipment is easily accessible to staff and will be used regularly to provide high quality gymnastics provision.

To provide of leadership time for PE leader.

Monitor the planning and teaching of PE throughout school.

Organise and run whole school sports day.

Organise available extra-curricular sporting opportunities for relevant year groups.


Increase enjoyment, engagement and participation in PE/Games.

Pupils are inspired by outside sporting clubs, coaches and agencies – exposure to role models and new sporting venues.

To enable the school to attend competitions.

Sports coach will escort and support children at regular competitions.

Leader to purchase membership for Association for Lewisham Primary School Sport for this academic year.




There will be an increase in participation in competitive sport and a reduction in inactivity.

To ensure all children develop life skills of swimming and survival.

Our swimming provision will be subsidised for year 3 and 4 children for 3 terms.


Pupils will be able to swim unaided for a sustained period of time over a distance of at least 25 metres.

Pupils will be able to use a range of recognised stroke and personal survival skills (such as front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, sculling, floating and surface dives)

Pupils will be able to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

To enable all children in the school to participate in a competitive sporting event.

Leader to organise and book sports day.


All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 will develop confidence to compete in sporting events. Pupils' collaborative skills to be developed.
