Our Nursery open days for prospective parents will be Wednesday 18th January 2017 at 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm and Tuesday 14th March at 9.30 am to 10.30 am. If you would like to attend either of these open days please arrive at least ten minutes before the time slot, as if you arrive after 1.30 or 9.30 unfortunately you will not be able to be admitted.
We understand that as parents you want to get a feel for a school you might want to consider for your child (even though in reality you are only likely to be offered the school nearest to where you live), and so we offer two open days a year where the headteacher will speak to parents as a group and pupils will show you around the school and answer your questions. This is so you can hear how we work, see the beautiful art the children produce and first hand experience the calm, productive atmosphere. Unfortunately as doing this with a very large group of people is very disruptive, we are unable to offer appointments outside of these times, however you are always welcome to go onto the website and see everything we do. Open days for children starting Reception in September 2017 are Thursday 13th October 2016, and Thursday 1st December 2016, beginning absolutely on the dot of 9.30 am. Please plan to arrive ten minutes earlier than this, as we will not admit anyone after 9.30 am. Please note, it is not a drop in session – you will have a brief talk from the headteacher, then be escorted around the school by the Year 6 children who will be delighted to answer any questions you may have.
Our nursery offers 20 part-time places, 10 in each morning or afternoon session from either 9.00 a.m.-12. 00 p.m. or 12.15 p.m.-3.15.p.m. We also have 10 full time places. Children usually start nursery in the term after their third birthday. Admission to the nursery is based firstly on educational, medical and social need. The other criteria for entry are the same as for Reception class. Please note – admission to the nursery does not guarantee a place in the school. There is no right to appeal to the nursery. Application forms for entry are available from the school office.
John Stainer takes 60 children into our two Reception classes each year in September, and it is always heavily oversubscribed. Applications for a Reception place are coordinated by Lewisham Local Authority and must be made either on Lewisham’s Common Application Form (available from the school office, the Access points or by calling the Admissions team on 020 8314 8282) or online by registering with www.eadmissions.org.uk or through a link on www.lewisham.gov.uk/admissions. Our admission policy follows the guidelines set out by Lewisham Authority. Children are admitted under the following criteria.
- Children ‘looked after’ by the local authority
- If they have a brother or sister already attending John Stainer
- Distance to school

When we have a vacancy in a year group, these can be applied for through Lewisham by completing an In Year Transfer form. The headteacher meets with all casual admission families to ascertain the reasons for the move, meet the children and welcome your family to our school.
